A note about Proclaim

Unlike some other presentation programs, Proclaim doesn't currently support multiple slide layers - only a foreground and background. To extend on Proclaim, we recommend using it alongside another tool like OBS (https://obsproject.com/)

This workflow involves a couple of extra steps compared to the normal Proclaim setup, but allows for the flexibility of captions and other overlay elements.

Set up a display and get the link

First choose between the 3 display types for showing captions in Presenter:

Show a set number of lines of scrolling captions over your video or presentation. This approach lets you set the number of lines, text size and caption background.
This is our recommended option for showing over videos & slides

Perfect for dedicated captions or translations monitors, where scrolling captions will take up the whole screen. Use the link to help put together your full screen display link.

Single-line captions with flexible styling options, perfect for lower thirds or subtitle style. Once you set up one of these displays, copy the link for the next step.

Create an example slide

If you don't already have a presentation set up, create a test slide to help provide an example while setting up the next steps.

Create a new NDI output

Proclaim can output slides to NDI, a popular format for transmitting video and audio between programs on a single computer, or computers on the same network. We'll be using this feature to send the Proclaim main slides feed to OBS.

  1. Open Settings > Display

  2. Scroll to "Outputs" and click "Add custom output"

  3. Give your output a memorable name

  4. Add virtual display and select "Slides"

  5. Save, then close the settings panel

  6. Click "On Air" to begin presenting and select a slide

Set up OBS

OBS is a popular presentation app for composing audio and video inputs into a live stream, but it can also present locally to an external screen. We'll be using it to overlay captions on top of the Proclaim output.

  1. Install OBS from https://obsproject.com

  2. Download and install the NDI plugin for OBS from https://distroav.org/

    • On https://distroav.org click download

    • You'll be directed to a GitHub link. Scroll down to "Assets" and download the installer matching your operating system

  3. Open OBS, then click "+" in the "Sources" panel. Click "NDI Source", then give the source a name like "Proclaim" and click "Ok"

  4. In the NDI source panel, click the Source name dropdown arrow. You should see your Proclaim display as an option. Select your display, then click "Ok" to confirm.

  5. Next click "+" to add another source and select the "Browser" type. Give this source a label like "CaptionKit" and click "Ok"

  6. Enter your CaptionKit display URL from the first step into the "URL" field. Next enter the width and height of your screen - this is normally 1920 x 1080. Click "Ok" to confirm.

  7. You can now start a test stream in CaptionKit and you should see the captions displayed over your Proclaim slides.

  8. To display this OBS screen on a second display, right-click the preview area, click "Open Preview Projector" and then select the display you would like to use.
