Set up a display and get the link

First choose between the 2 display types for showing captions in OBS:

Perfect for dedicated captions or translations monitors, where scrolling captions will take up the whole screen. Use the link to help put together your full screen display link.

Single-line captions with flexible styling options, perfect for lower thirds or subtitle style. Once you set up one of these displays, copy the link for the next step.

Add the display to OBS

CaptionKit uses OBS's Browser source type, to display the live caption webpage within a presentation. This setup is quick and easy to configure and ensures that minimal changes are needed to your OBS presentation.

  • In OBS, click the + icon in the Sources panel and select Browser

  • A popup will appear, select Create New and call the source Captions, then click OK

  • The source properties popup will appear. Paste your Display URL from CaptionKit in the URL input. Then update the Width and Height inputs to match the size of your OBS scene (usually 1920 by 1080). Press OK to confirm.

  • The correct website preview may not display the next time you open the source properties.

  • Resize the Captions source on your scene to the full size of the scene.

  • Turn captions on and off in your scene by clicking the eye button in the source row

A couple of last notes

To test a display with example test, add ?text=Your example text to the end of your display URL. This will ensure you always have test on screen to test with.

Once you're done testing, just remove everything after the ? to ensure your display shows only live caption text.
